Pilates For Seniors Whether you’ve been active all your life, or you are looking for a way to get started, Pilates is a great way to enhance overall physical condition, strength, and flexibility. Back in the 1920’s when Joseph Pilates first developed his innovative exercise technique called PILATES, he is quoted to have said “I am fifty years ahead of my time”. Right he was! A frail and sickly child, by the time he passed away in 1967 at the age of 87, he had pioneered a ground-breaking fitness phenomenon that was suitable for people of all ages and all ability levels. ALL EXERCISES BUILD STRENGTH AND MOBILITY THROUGHOUT THE BODY WITH EMPHASIS ON THE MUSCLES THAT SUPPORT THE SPINE, PELVIS AND SHOULDERS. Joseph Pilates’ exercise program was unique. He professed that the route to physical fitness and well-being lay in exercising the mind as well as the body. Known as the “thinking persons exercise” Pilates teaches you to listen and to feel your body during each exercise. This helps us develop heightened awareness and a deep respect for how our bodies function, what we are capable of, and what our limitations are. Pilates is done on a mat or on specialized pieces of equipment. All exercises build strength and mobility throughout the body with emphasis on the muscles that support the spine, pelvis and shoulders. Focus on abdominal and back muscles is a integral part of every class- the bonus being that as your midriff becomes more toned and supported, your posture and balance improve. Pilates devotees often comment on feeling taller, stronger all over, and better aligned. Not bad for an hour of exercise! Pilates is about “All Gain Without Pain”. What one person
can do is not necessarily what another can do. By tuning into the body
and mind together, you work with your body rather that against it, and
learn to exercise in just the right way for you.
